Road Safety
For the past year, FVS has been campaigning with
West Sussex County Council’s Highways Department
to introduce a raft of measures for improvements in road safety on the
Findon Road, some of them minor and inexpensive, some of them not.
Separately, we have also campaigned with
Highways Agency
seeking improvements in pedestrian and cycling safety at Offington
Corner.
WSCC,
County Highways (CH) is responsible
for the A24, and has to operate within its own budgetary constraints.
Highways Agency (HA) is responsible for the A27,
(because it is a “Trunk Route”). It is Centrally Funded, which explains in part
why there are two (largely unused) Puffin Crossings at Swandean, whilst on
Findon Road, where the need is far greater, there are none.
Last autumn,
Vale School set up the
mechanism for a “Safer Routes to School” campaign.
FVS has supported this endeavour. Although FVS and SRS have differing agenda, at
no point are these in conflict. Some of the following attainments and
progressions are attributable to this alliance.

“Everybody Lives On The Wrong Side”
The School lies on the west side of the Valley. All other facilities (shops, churches, library, surgery and pharmacy) are located across the A24 on the east. If you have to use the bus service, you will need to cross the A24 for one leg of your journey.
