Findon's Fair

By Terry Curtis

"Findon's fair" is how many of the locals might modestly describe this gently rolling countryside of Sussex where one can walk around such beauty spots as the historic Cissbury Ring and enjoy uninterrupted views into the distance over both South Downs and sea.

A journalistic friend of mine aptly described it as the 'Big Country' when, having been transferred from Sussex to the restricted byways of Devon, he lamented the loss of his favourite downland walks where, as he said, you have freedom to stroll for miles over many attractive routes and yet rarely meet another soul.

Having lived here for nearly 50 years my family and I, together with dogs, pushchairs, back packs and whatever, have covered most of the routes, and yet, because of their diversity, never feel that the freshness of discovery has diminished.

We chose to live in this area for, having considered many other parts of England, we concluded that whilst there are undoubtedly more scenic coastlines and spectacular counties elsewhere, no other locality could offer us the total combination of downland beauty, sea and a pleasant residential county town all within easy distance of London, air and sea ports.

Having previously lived on the outskirts of London we also appreciated the variety of sporting and entertainment facilities that are available all year round within such a compact radius. Add to all this the delightful villages that abound and the wonderful variety of homes to be bought and it is no wonder that many choose this as their number one retirement area.

As an estate agent who has been practising here for the last 50 years I have compiled particulars of hundreds and hundreds of properties outlining its facilities and delights but I have never once been able to include in the actual write-up the other major benefit from moving here, which is the people themselves.

It is only after you have become a resident of Findon, whether it be the Valley or Village, that you can fully appreciate the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of the community that makes Findon much more than 'fair'.
