Safer Routes to School Introduction The 'Safer Routes to School Scheme is a Government Initiative that is active throughout the country. They are trying to encourage children to walk to school for health reasons. There would be a consequent reduction in road traffic and thus less Carbon emissions. To keep the children safer on their way to school, The Highways Agency have made some improvements on the roads by lane narrowing, slow down signs, etc. We have a very good school in the Valley, The Vale First and Middle, for which there are children from all over the immediate area attending. The A24 runs through the middle of Findon Valley and has recently had some improvements, but the School and the Findon Valley Residents' Association are still battling for more. As well as the School's pupils we also have the residents of the Valley to consider, many of whom are elderly.
Safer Routes to School - Main Issues - improved road barriers and road markers on the A24 - - road speed management in operation on A24 - - improved road signage on Bost Hill - - big promotion of 'walk to school' - - monitoring of 'walk to school' success - - Highways Agency to undertake study for A27 controlled pedestrian crossing - - ongoing discussion with West Sussex County Council regarding improvements to foot path on Bost Hill - - possible pinch point on Bost Hill to reduce speed and width of vehicles - - review "drop off" zone area for car users - - consider "Foot Steps" training for Reception and Year 1 (the information had been provided to the school but no final decision has been reached on undertaking this training scheme for the younger pupils) -
