BOGUS BANK CALLS

Residents warned following bogus bank calls in Crawley

I would not normally send out any messages that do not concern your area, but this Scam that happened in Crawley could work its way to your area.

Police are warning residents in Crawley to be aware of bogus bank callers after three elderly residents have been targeted. Between Friday 20 January and Saturday 21 January three residents received phone calls from people claiming to be from the victim's bank.

The callers convinced the victims that their bank cards had been compromised and said they would send a courier to collect them. A short time later a man arrived and collected the cards. Money was then taken from the accounts at local ATMs.

Detective Constable Matt Wilson of West Sussex CID said: "The caller knew personal information about each victim and they were able to obtain further information during the phone call.

"If your bank cards are ever compromised your bank does not need them back. They will never collect them but will cancel them and arrange for replacements to be sent.

"If you receive a call from anyone claiming to be from your bank then you should never give any personal information or your PIN.

"If you are in any doubt about who the caller is then hang up and call your bank, or if someone arranges to collect your cards call police immediately on 999."

Anyone with information regarding any of these incidents, or anyone who would like to get further advice, can call Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 0637 of 21/01 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Best regards

SHOPLIFTING SUSPECTS

Your Neighbourhood Policing Team would like to advise you that there have been a number of thefts of staff property from businesses across Lewes district.

Reports indicate that two women, possibly of Spanish or Romanian origin, who do not speak good English, have been entering hairdressers, estate agents and offices across the district with the intention to steal items such as mobile phones and purses from staff.

The women, both described as 5”5 in height of medium build with dark complexions, use distraction techniques to create opportunities for theft.

In a recent incident one of the women distracted the shop owner by speaking animatedly in a foreign language trying to keep the attention from her accomplice.

Please be vigilant, these incidents have now been reported across Lewes Town and the Coast.

It is worth bearing this in mind when you are out shopping and being cautious with your possessions.

Do not to leave purses / phones in open bags, prams or pockets where they could be easily taken.

Please report any suspicious activity to Sussex Police on 101 or 999 if you witness a crime in progress.

NEW EMAIL ADDRESS TO USE INSTEAD OF 101

As valuable as the recent 101 notice message that was sent out recently, it has been suggested by Roy Peacock, NHW Coordinator of Eastbourne, to circulate a complimentary message to inform you of the Police email address for reporting like messages as for 101 to Sussex Police. Besides, unlike 101 it does not cost anything and a reference number is given in a reply message. An advantage of using this approach is that those making the report have a record of it and the reference number that applies for any future use.

The email address is : contact.centre@sussex.pnn.police.uk

JOINING NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH - ADVICE

I have been contacted several times by Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) members across Sussex regarding information either to do with outside websites or information required from the Police etc. I therefore would like to clarify these points.

 Websites

If you receive, an email either from the Police or direct from a website asking you to join another NEW NHW website i.e. nhwo.co.uk this is your choice, but this website is not recognised by either Sussex Federation NHW or national NHWN. You have your own local NHW website that is normally current with information, if you are not aware of your local website address please let me know. The ACC Robin Merrett supports both www.sussexnhfed.org.uk and www.ourwatch.org.uk

 NHW Members list

With regards to our members database, the ONLY NHW members data that is required by the Police is the Area Coordinator/Street Coordinator details and NOT their members. Information given to the Coordinators must stay with them, and are protected under the Data Protection Act. The system is very simple, information from the Police, which must not be altered in any shape or form which is passed to the coordinators who pass on to their members.

I trust this is a simple clarification to the above points.
