LETTER FROM COUNCILLOR BRYAN TURNER, CABINET MEMBER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, WORTHING BOROUGH COUNCIL, DATED 28TH MARCH 2006 TO LEROY BRYAN, CHAIRMAN, FINDON VALLEY SOCIETY

Dear Mr Bryan

I promised to write to you when I had definite news on security improvements at Durrington cemetery.  Our officer in charge of the project, Mr Carl Flinn, has informed me that he has secured the necessary funding and has ordered the required gating.  He expects to have the gates in place in the very near future.

We will therefore be installing a lockable gate to the side entrance in Findon Valley, and also to the Mill Road* entrance.  These gates will be locked in the evenings, and reopened in the mornings.  We will also be planting a thorny hedge around the walls which in time will provide another effective barrier.  The main gate, at the roundabout, we propose to leave open for the time being as we really don’t wish to restrict access to those who feel the need to visit the cemetery for any of the correct reasons.  We hope the actions outlined will be enough to stop the vandalism problem, but we will take more stringent measure if needed.

I hope this letter will be of some comfort to the lady we spoke about.  I would be very grateful if you pass on to her my condolences for the awful loss she has suffered.

Yours faithfully

B TURNER (signed)
